The REGISTRAR OF NEWSPAPERS FOR INDIA , is better known as RNI, is a legal entity of the Indian government for Newspapers of India. It was founded on July 1, 1956, on the recommendation of the first press commission in 1953 and by amendment of the 1867 law on the press and book registration. The Office of the Chancellor of India is based in New Delhi and has three regional offices in Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai. The RNI regulates and controls the printing and publication of newspapers in accordance with the Press and Book Registration Act of 1867 and the (central) newspaper registration rules of 1956. The registrar is called the press chancellor, and SM Khan, a senior IIS official since 1982, is the current press chancellor and head of the department. The Press and Books Registry Law Contains the functions and functions of the RNI.
